Which AirPods Charging Case Do You Need? A2700, A2968, A3122 or A3059

Losing an AirPods charging case does not necessarily mean that you need to replace the earbuds too. You can purchase an individual replacement case, but it must belong to the same compatible model family as the AirPods you already own.

This is where mistakes happen. Several AirPods cases look nearly identical, and three of the cases covered here use USB-C. The charging connector alone does not identify which replacement case will work.

Quick answer: AirPods Pro 2 Lightning earbuds use case A2700. AirPods Pro 2 USB-C earbuds use case A2968. AirPods Pro 3 earbuds use case A3122. AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation use case A3059. These cases should not be treated as interchangeable.

AirPods replacement charging-case compatibility chart

Match the model number on your remaining AirPod to the appropriate charging case before ordering.

Charging case AirPods family Matching left AirPod Matching right AirPod Plug-in charging
A2700 AirPods Pro 2 Lightning A2699 A2698 Lightning
A2968 AirPods Pro 2 USB-C A3048 A3047 USB-C
A3122 AirPods Pro 3 A3064 A3063 USB-C
A3059 AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation A3056 A3055 USB-C

Compatibility warning: A USB-C port does not make A2968, A3122 and A3059 interchangeable. Each case is designed for a different AirPods model family.

Can AirPods charging cases be interchanged?

Not across these four model families. A replacement case must support the exact AirPods version you own. Similar shape, the same color, or the presence of a USB-C port does not establish compatibility.

For example, A2968 and A3122 are both USB-C MagSafe cases for AirPods Pro models. That does not make A3122 an upgrade case for AirPods Pro 2, and it does not make A2968 compatible with AirPods Pro 3.

AirPods from different original retail sets can work together when every component belongs to the same compatible model family. Read our complete guide to using AirPods from different sets together.

How to identify which charging case you need

  1. Check the remaining AirPod. Find the small model number printed on the underside of the earbud. It begins with the letter “A.”
  2. Identify the product family. Use the compatibility chart above to match that earbud number with A2700, A2968, A3122 or A3059.
  3. Check the charging port. A2700 uses Lightning. The other three cases in this guide use USB-C.
  4. Do not rely on appearance. The two AirPods Pro 2 cases and the AirPods Pro 3 case are especially easy to confuse in photographs.
  5. Confirm before ordering. Compare the model information with the compatibility statement on the product page.

  3. Match the left and right earbud family to the charging case.
  4. Confirm whether the case uses Lightning or USB-C for plug-in charging.
  5. Verify that the listing includes the charging case only if that is the component you need.
