How to Pair a Replacement AirPod With Your Existing AirPod

Replacement AirPod pairing with an existing AirPod in a charging case

AirPod Replacement Store · Setup Guide

Quick answer: You can pair a compatible replacement AirPod with your existing AirPod and charging case. First confirm that all three components belong to the same AirPods model family. Then place both earbuds in the case, connect the case to power, wait 20 minutes, and complete the appropriate reset and pairing procedure below.

The setup control depends on your model. AirPods 1, AirPods 2, AirPods 3, AirPods Pro 1, and AirPods Pro 2 use the setup button on the back of the charging case. AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 3 use the touch-sensitive area on the front of the case.

Instructions reviewed against Apple Support information in September 2026.

Before pairing your replacement AirPod

A replacement AirPod must be compatible with your remaining earbud and charging case. AirPods that look nearly identical can belong to different generations or model-number groups.

  1. Confirm whether the replacement is for the left or right ear.
  2. Find the model number printed on the underside of your remaining AirPod.
  3. Check the model number inside the charging-case lid.
  4. Confirm that the replacement belongs to the same model family.
  5. Make sure the charging case has enough power to complete setup.

If you are uncertain which model you have, use our AirPods model-number identification guide before attempting to pair the replacement.

Common replacement AirPod model combinations

AirPods model Left AirPod Right AirPod Charging case
AirPods Pro 2 USB-C A3048 A3047 A2968
AirPods Pro 2 Lightning A2699 A2698 A2700
AirPods Pro 3 A3064 A3063 A3122
AirPods 4 with ANC A3056 A3055 A3059

Do not select a replacement based only on its appearance. For example, the USB-C and Lightning versions of AirPods Pro 2 look similar but use different model-number groups.

Read our AirPods Pro 2 USB-C versus Lightning compatibility guide for a complete comparison of those two systems.

How to pair a replacement AirPod using the rear setup button

Use this procedure for AirPods 1, AirPods 2, AirPods 3, AirPods Pro 1, and AirPods Pro 2.

  1. Place your original AirPod and the replacement AirPod in the compatible charging case.
  2. Connect the charging case to power.
  3. Close the lid and wait 20 minutes.
  4. Open the lid and check the status light.
  5. If the status light is already flashing white, continue to the Bluetooth steps below.
  6. If the light is not flashing white, leave the lid open and press and hold the setup button on the back of the case for approximately 15 seconds.
  7. Release the button after the status light flashes amber and then white.
  8. Close the charging-case lid.
  9. On your iPhone or iPad, open Settings → Bluetooth.
  10. If the old AirPods connection appears, tap the information button beside it, select Forget This Device, and confirm.
  11. Return to the Home Screen and open the charging-case lid near your device.
  12. When the setup animation appears, tap Connect and then Done.

Apple’s current replacement setup procedure uses the 20-minute charging period before the charging case is reset and reconnected.

How to pair AirPods 4 or AirPods Pro 3 replacements

AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 3 cases use a front touch control rather than the traditional setup button on the back.

  1. Place both compatible AirPods in the charging case.
  2. Connect the case to power.
  3. Close the lid and wait 20 minutes.
  4. Open the lid and check the status light.
  5. If the light is flashing white, continue to the Bluetooth steps below.
  6. If the light is not flashing white, double-tap the front of the case while the status light is on.
  7. Double-tap the front again when the light flashes white.
  8. When the light begins flashing faster, double-tap the front a third time.
  9. Wait for the status light to flash amber and then white.
  10. Close the charging-case lid.
  11. On your iPhone or iPad, open Settings → Bluetooth.
  12. If the previous AirPods connection appears, tap its information button and choose Forget This Device.
  13. Return to the Home Screen and open the case near the device.
  14. Tap Connect when the setup animation appears, then tap Done.

Why won’t my replacement AirPod pair?

A replacement AirPod commonly fails to pair when the components are incompatible, one earbud is not charging, the old Bluetooth connection remains saved, or a component is still associated with another Apple Account.

1. Recheck every model number

Verify the number on each AirPod and inside the charging case. Do not assume two earbuds are compatible simply because they have the same external design.

2. Confirm that both AirPods are charging

Place both earbuds in the case and check their charging status on the connected iPhone or iPad. If one side does not charge, inspect the case wells and charging contacts for dirt or debris.

3. Repeat the powered 20-minute wait

Put both AirPods in the case, connect the case to power, close the lid, and wait another 20 minutes. Then repeat the setup procedure for your case type.

4. Forget the old Bluetooth connection

Go to Settings → Bluetooth, tap the information button beside the existing AirPods entry, and select Forget This Device. Then restart the pairing procedure.

5. Check for an AirPods mismatch alert

A mismatch alert can appear when the earbuds belong to different model families, when components were mixed up, or when an AirPod remains associated with another Apple Account.

Follow our AirPods mismatch troubleshooting guide if this message appears.

6. Check the previous Apple Account

If the replacement was previously used, it may need to be removed from the former owner’s Apple Account before all Find My features work correctly. Resetting the case does not, by itself, remove an Apple Account association.

Can AirPods from two different sets work together?

Yes. Compatible AirPods do not have to come from the same original retail set. The left AirPod, right AirPod, and charging case must belong to the same compatible model family.

Use our AirPods compatibility guide to match the correct left AirPod, right AirPod, and charging case before beginning the pairing process.

Replacement AirPod pairing checklist

  • Confirm the replacement is the correct left or right side.
  • Match the model numbers of the earbuds and charging case.
  • Place both AirPods in the case.
  • Connect the case to power and wait 20 minutes.
  • Use the rear-button or front-touch procedure for your model.
  • Forget the previous Bluetooth connection if it still appears.
  • Open the case near your iPhone or iPad and select Connect.
  • Investigate model compatibility or Apple Account association if a mismatch alert remains.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pair one new AirPod with my old AirPod?

Yes. A compatible replacement can be paired with your remaining AirPod and charging case. Match the exact model family first and then complete the replacement setup process.

How long does it take to pair a replacement AirPod?

Apple’s procedure requires the assembled AirPods and charging case to remain connected to power with the lid closed for 20 minutes before setup. The reset and on-screen connection normally require only a few additional minutes.

Why is my replacement AirPod flashing amber?

An amber light during reset can be part of the normal setup sequence. The case should eventually flash white, indicating that it is ready to connect. If it never flashes white, recharge the case and repeat the procedure.

Do replacement AirPods need to have matching model numbers?

The left and right earbuds usually have different model numbers, but both must belong to the same compatible model family. Match the replacement using a compatibility table rather than looking for an identical number on both sides.

Why does my iPhone say the AirPods are mismatched?

The alert can indicate different AirPods generations, mixed components, or an AirPod associated with another Apple Account. Verify the model numbers before assuming the replacement is defective.

Can I use a replacement AirPod that came from another set?

Yes, provided it belongs to the correct compatible model family. A previously used replacement may also need to be removed from the former owner’s Apple Account so Find My and setup work correctly. Use our guide to using AirPods from different sets together to verify the left AirPod, right AirPod, and charging-case combination.
