Quick answer: To identify which AirPods you have, find the model number beginning with the letter A. You can find it on the underside of an AirPod or in the AirPods information on a paired iPhone or iPad. Then match the model number with the tables below.

If you are buying a replacement AirPod or charging case, identify the earbuds and charging case separately before ordering.

AirPods from different generations can look extremely similar, so appearance alone is not a reliable way to choose a replacement. The model number tells you which AirPods family you own and helps you identify compatible replacement parts.

This guide covers current and previous AirPods and AirPods Pro earbuds, including AirPods 5, AirPods 4, AirPods Pro 3, AirPods Pro 2, and older generations. AirPods Max are outside the replacement-earbud scope of this guide.

Where Is the Model Number on an AirPod?

The AirPods model number is printed in small text on the underside of each AirPod. It begins with the letter A followed by four digits, such as A3048 or A2564.

  1. Remove the AirPod from the charging case. Turn the earbud over so you can inspect the small printed text.
  2. Use bright lighting. The printing is small. Your phone's camera or magnification feature can make the number easier to read.
  3. Look for the A-number. Record the complete number beginning with A.
  4. Match the number with the chart below. Do not choose a replacement based only on the AirPod's shape or appearance.

Apple confirms that AirPods and AirPods Pro model numbers are printed on the underside of each AirPod: Apple's AirPods identification guide .

How to Find Your AirPods Model Number in Settings

If your AirPods are paired with an iPhone or iPad, you can also identify them through Settings.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Bluetooth.
  3. Find your AirPods in the device list.
  4. Tap the information button beside them.
  5. Find the Model Number field.

If you are ordering a single replacement AirPod, it is still useful to photograph the printed information on the AirPod you physically have. That gives you a direct reference while comparing replacement listings.

Charging-case model numbers and compatibility information are based on Apple's current AirPods identification guide .

AirPods 5: Why the Exact Version Matters

AirPods 5 were introduced in two separate versions in 2026: AirPods 5 and AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case. Although the names are similar, Apple lists separate model-number families and separate charging cases for the two versions.

Standard AirPods 5 use charging case A3529. AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case use case A3530.

Do not assume the two AirPods 5 versions are interchangeable. Apple states that the standard AirPods 5 case is not compatible with AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case earbuds, and the wireless case is not compatible with standard AirPods 5 earbuds.

AirPods Pro 2: USB-C vs. Lightning

AirPods Pro 2 are another model where identifying the exact version matters. Apple released a Lightning version in 2022 and a USB-C version in 2023.

The USB-C version includes models in the A3047/A3048/A3049 family and uses charging case A2968. The Lightning version includes the A2931/A2699/A2698 family and uses charging case A2700.

Model Number vs. Serial Number: What's the Difference?

The model number identifies which AirPods model or generation you own. It begins with A and is the number you should use with the identification tables on this page.

The serial number is a different identifier used for service, device records, and coverage information.

For replacement shopping, start with the A-number, generation, and missing side rather than trying to match a serial number.

Apple explains serial-number locations separately in its AirPods serial-number guide .

How to Use the Model Number to Buy the Correct Replacement AirPod

Once you know which AirPods family you own, determine which side is missing and compare the model information with the replacement listing.

Left and right refer to the ear where the AirPod is worn. If your remaining AirPod is the right earbud, you need the matching left replacement, and vice versa.

Frequently Asked Questions About AirPods Model Numbers

How do I tell which AirPods I have?

Find the model number beginning with A on the underside of your AirPod or in the AirPods information in Settings. Match that number with the model-number chart above to identify the generation.

Where is the AirPod model number printed?

On AirPods and AirPods Pro, Apple prints the model number on the underside of each individual AirPod. It begins with the letter A.

Can I identify my AirPods by the charging case?

The charging case can help identify the AirPods family because it has its own model number and physical characteristics. For replacement shopping, however, check both the earbuds and charging case whenever possible.

Is the model number the same as the serial number?

No. The model number identifies the AirPods model family, while the serial number is a separate device identifier used for service and device records.

Why do some AirPods generations have several model numbers?

Apple lists multiple model identifiers within several AirPods families. When choosing a replacement, use the exact model information from the component you own and compare it with the seller's compatibility information rather than assuming every identifier in a generation is interchangeable.

Can I identify AirPods just by looking at them?

Visual appearance can provide clues, but it is not the safest method for replacement shopping. Different AirPods versions can look very similar. Use the printed model number whenever possible.

What should I check before ordering a replacement AirPod?

Confirm the AirPods generation, the model number on your remaining earbud, which side is missing, and the charging-case model. Then compare those details with the compatibility information on the replacement listing.
